I am obsessed with paper putz Christmas villages. I have quite the collection and I love making and decorating blank ones! This year, I wanted to create a new addition and keep the theme "cotton candy Christmas". As some of you may or may not know, most Hobby and craft stores sell blank cardboard houses. Now, I have made a house from scratch with cardboard scraps, but let me tell ya, it's hard. And finding the right kind of cardboard is a pain. By the end of it all, making it yourself is stressful and just doesn't look quite right.
So what I did was went on the search for blank houses. If you google "blank paper christmas village" or anything of the sort, you will see tons! And they are all fantastically over-priced. So overpriced that I could get an already made one at Target or online for the same price. But instead of searching in the "christmas" nitch, I decided to just search for cardboard houses in general. First place I looked, Hobby Lobby, had tons! This giant one above was only 5 dollars! Plus most craft stores have sales and coupons constantly. I bought 2, a little one for 3 and a big one for 5. I couldn't have been more thrilled!
Here's what you need:
- Blank cardboard house
- Acrylic paints
- Mod Podge
- Glitter
- Metallic pipe cleaners
- Glue
I wanted to try the big one first to add to my Christmas village collection. And what I love most is that the roof comes off! So you can put battery operated candles or lights inside! Maybe even tiny little people ;)
I started by painting the whole house in pink, blue and white tones. I scalloped the top of the roof, added a wavy white pattern to the bottom of the house for the illusion of snow and outlined all of the windows.
Once it was dry, I painted a heavy coat of mod podge over areas of the house, then sprinkled with glitter. I used white and silver glitter on the blue roof and white and pink glitter for the house!
Then I glued on silver pipecleaners to the edge of the roof to really make it pop. This was my favorite addition to the house. I used the leftover pipecleaner edges to make a little wreath as well.
I let it dry and then put it on display! What do you think?
Hope you are enjoying this dreary Friday! This week has been crazy hectic and I'm ready for Saturday!
Oh wooow!!
The house is soooo wonderful!♥♥
It is such a sweet Christmas decoration (:

It's so pretty! Seems like it would be really fun to make this. It's also a great thing to do every year and start a tradition. :)
