I have found that the Office (second only to the bedroom) can become the most cluttered and messy spot in the house. Because you will enevitably have a lot of little things, trash cans, folders, file cabinets, and all those necessary things, you need to keep your space fairly plain. The most visually appealing offices always have very basic colors working together in the room.
For example, plain white walls? Find one or two accent colors that can be used in one small object, a picture frame, etc. to make the room pop. Who said white walls were always a bad thing? They, in all honesty, bring more of a clean and organized feel to the room, so long as the room is actually clean ;)
Black chalkboard walls? Accent with few colors to make the room pop. Don't use 6 or 7 colors. That room is already dramatic with a dark chalkboard wall. Don't introduce too many patterns or colors into an already deep colored room. That's when a clean room can just start looking messy.
Have a very light shade of paint on the walls? Use that color to accent your space along with other very light shades. You either want striking contrast or hardly noticeable changes in colors and patterns. Don't introduce too many colors. Keep things simple, cause like I said, once you are done "decorating" there will be lots of brightly colored and patterned objects to introduce to the room (books, folders, pictures, staplers, computers, mouse pads, etc.) Let those objects be your pops of color and take it easy on everything else! Less is more! :)
This is getting me inspired to ACTUALLY finish my own office. I need to get pictures up of that too!

I LOVE this. Our office is the last room in our house we have to unpack and decorate, we've basically been using it to store all the crap we haven't been unpacking over the past year. While I am finally all done with unpacking my stuff, the husband has been dragging his feet like nobody's business but I digress...maybe using these pics as inspiration I can draw up a design plan for the room and that will encourage him to get his junk picked up and put away so we stop looking like future hoarders!

Hahaha this just cracked me up! I understand this ALL too well! We are STILL unpacking our house from over a year ago. It's a long process and we both have a hard time sticking to it. It's easy to keep certain parts of the house neat and organized, but my office is just messy….

I actually live in an efficiency right now (which isn't too bad, really), but I REALLY WANT A DESK. I have a computer cabinet that I bought from Walmart (of all places) years ago. I want a real desk. A white one, perhaps, maybe one with a glass top. Something real, something open.

That sounds quite nice! Occasionally, I will spot something at Walmart like that :P It's the last place you think you would find furniture.
